Bridging Legacy and Innovation
Born into a humble family in the Madhubani district of Bihar, Kamlesh Roy grew up surrounded by the rhythms of folk art. His earliest inspiration came from his late mother, Pavitri Devi, who would create Madhubani paintings and idols during festivals and local celebrations. Watching her work sparked Kamlesh’s deep love for the art form—one that would shape his life and career.
Determined to honor his roots while building his future, Kamlesh pursued formal training, earning a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts and continuing his education through workshops and mentorships with renowned Madhubani artists. Though tradition shaped his foundation, Kamlesh remained a lifelong student, always seeking to expand his creative language.
“My work is a reflection of all those who have influenced me - guided by tradition, driven by curiosity,” he says.
Kamlesh's style blends classical Madhubani motifs with a contemporary lens. His bold use of color, layered symbolism, and intricate detailing have earned him recognition both nationally and internationally, with his works featured in global exhibitions and studied in universities around the world.
When visiting his home, you’ll find him working alongside his sister and extended family in a vibrant joint household where art is a collective effort. His relatives support him during larger projects, and the atmosphere is one of creativity, community, and shared legacy.
Each of Kamlesh’s paintings tells a story - infused with cultural meaning, personal reflection, and artistic experimentation. His formal training allows him to push boundaries while preserving the essence of Madhubani. His unique compositions are rich with tiny elements, each representing an emotion, a moment, or an idea he chooses to express through brush and color.
